Selecting a Major - BIOL or BIOT????

How to select a major? Biological Sciences or Biotechnology ..
This is one of the main questions that students want to deal with. Well! first of all we suggest here that look at your career and life goals. What kind of career you are interested in? Teaching, research lab scientists, administration, writing, or else. For example, if you are interested in school or college level teaching, or you are interested in zoo / safari management you can select biological sciences. You will get a benefit of learning both parts of life sciences, animal and plant science. Their life, their systems and behaviors will help you in your future life and career.
If your want to go in industry, pharmaceutical science, research organization jobs or in a diagnostic lab, you can select biotechnology. You will learn the basics of molecular biology, microbiology, biochemistry, human biology and related fields so that you can go right in your further studies.

Some New Major Electives

Dear Students

Following courses are approved as major electives in the Biological Sciences Department as per following information:

1. Mycology, Plant Pathology, Conservation Biology (Major Elective for BIOL Major students)

2. Human Physiology, Molecular and Clinical Endocrinology, Industrial Microbiology, Cancer Biology (for both BIOL and BIOT major students)

Credit Hour Issues in Course Registration

While registering for a course, look at its credit hours in the EMPOWER. Credits in EMPOWER may be different from the catalog that you have. Many courses are revised / modified from time to time by the departments.
While registering for a course, look for pre-requisites of the courses. Pre-requisites also may be revised by the departments.

Concentration in Biological Sciences and Biotechnology major students

Dear Students

Here are suggestions for possible concentrations for the Biological Sciences and Biotechnology major students (combinations of subjects leading to particular fields). These are beneficial for grabbing admission in a particular field for higher studies in Pakistan and abroad.
Agriculture (Agriculture Biotechnology, Applied Botany, Commercialisation of Biotechnology Products, Genomics and Tools of Bioinformatics, Research Design and Biostatistics, Mycology, Integrated Pest Management, Applied Entomology)
Health (Neurobiology, Regenerative and Developmental Biology, Human Physiology, Molecular and Clinical Endocrinology, Molecular Immunology, Cancer Biology, Medical Biotechnology, Research Design and Biostatistics, Genomics and Tools of Bioinformatics, Applied Zoology)
Microbiology (Commercialisation of Biotechnology Products, Industrial Microbiology, Food and Dairy Technology, Microbial Biochemistry, Genomics and Tools of Bioinformatics, Research Design and Biostatistics, Mycology, Industrial Microbiology, Fundamentals of Virology)

Common Issues in Degree Audit

Discontinued Major Elective Course

For Biological Sciences and Biotechnology Major students at FCC: If a major elective course is discontinued by the department; Students who already have studied it, will get its credits as major elective. If they study its replacement course in addition to the discontinued one, the first one will be considered as major elective and the second one as a free elective.

For Biological Sciences Major Students (17 and previous Series)

For Biological Sciences Major students at FCC: BIOL 202 and 204 (both 4 credits) were discontinued in 2013. Hence, students following catalogs (2013 or previous) who have not studied BIOL 202 and 204 (core courses for them) can take BIOL 102 (Introductory Plant Biology, credits: 4) in lieu of BIOL 202 and BIOL 105 (General Zoology, credits: 4) in lieu of BIOL 204.

What is a Free Elective?

A free elective course may be any course from the university. Free electives are required to cover up credits remains after finishing credits required as general education, core and major electives. You have to complete 130 credits to obtain the BS degree.

Requirement of 12 Upper Level Courses

A total of 12 upper level courses (300/400) are required to earn the BS degree. All courses including general education, core, major electives and free electives may count towards this requirements.

Advising System of FCC

FCC assigns an advisor to every student to guide them through their studies and to get their degrees on time. Most of the teachers of every department are advising students. I am Dr Saba Butt, at the Department of Biological Sciences. I am advising the students majoring in biological sciences and biotechnology. I shall share information that is required by students of these majors. All students are welcome to ask any questions about degree audit or related information.
